Hello all,

As my readers are likely aware, I am in the process of making my first feature-length film.

As a life-long fan of horror films, I decided that my first venture should be a slasher pic. This might seem an odd choice for the writer/director of Skeet Shooting, Jimmy’s Basement, and the upcoming Memoirs of a Stinky Sofa, which are all comedies, but I love horror and have always wanted to make a horror film.

There are a million things I could go over in this blog about the process of approaching an independent feature. Filmmakers, and actors write all over the internet about tips, tricks, and advice about making your film for nothing. I would say that if you’re interested in making a film, google your fingers off and look into what’s out there. Read the advice. USE the advice, however, be sure you take every peice of advice with a pound or so of salt. What works for one filmmaker probably won’t work for another, and there are usually several pieces of solid advice on a given subject, many of which will contradict one another. Use what you can, make these ideas your own, but never be afraid to toss something out if its not going to work.

The most important thing to do while making a film is the thing that works.

Here’s one of many anecdotal examples:

One of my professors, who I hold in the highest regard, told me that my films were sometimes lacking in the performance department.

“I think you should have casted (so-and-so) more aggressively. Did you just put your friends in there and teach them the lines?”

Well, yeah, I had. To be fair, I’m pretty proud of the results. However, up until now, I have been making short comedies through my school to learn how to make movies. No more of that small-time stuff for me, I’m making a feature film now! I need to up my game!!

So, taking his advice, I elected to set up casting calls and aggressively pursue talent to come to auditions (which I will be holding  at the end of this month.) I found a sweet location, a bar where we could have run of the building, and more importantly, the stage, during closed hours for free! This has been part of a long and productive relationship with this particular establishment (Kryptonite Bar in Rockford, IL. Go, drink there, tell em you read about it here) and I was grateful for the location.

I emailed my professor to let  him know the good news.

“I’ve never heard of auditions at a bar,” he replied. “Sounds pretty unprofessional. Who would go to that?”

Crap. Unprofessional? That’s bad.

I considered where he was coming from for a moment, and I gave his concern some thought. Then I asked myself, “what’s more important? Getting good people who can bring the performances, regardless of ‘experience’ or ‘clout,’ or catering to people that were ‘too good to audition at a bar,’ and with that kind of attitude would no doubt be unpleasant on set when I covered them with blood, dirt, and whatever else I could find.” Seemed pretty simple to me.

I defended my position by saying that the price for the location was right, and by right I meant free, and if actors wanted the work, they would come.

I’m proud to report we have about 50 people scheduled to come in for that little “audition in a bar that no one would want to come to.” People with resumes and reels, as well as inexperienced talent looking for their big break.

Now, who knows? We might strike gold at these auditions, or they could be filled with a whole bunch of “don’t call us, we’ll call you” worthy performances. Hell, half of the scheduled people might not even show up, but it seems that we did something here that was a little unconventional, and so far, it’s paying off.

The point is this: I was given advice twice by a specific person, regarding a specific issue. While I considered the wisdom of the advice both times,  I chose to follow the advice on one point, and largely disregard it on the second.

As a low-no budget filmmaker, you’re going to have to bend rules, break rules, find new and inventive ways to approach things like financing, auditions and location scouting. All this before you rehearse a line of dialogue or shoot a single frame of your indie opus.

I’m not telling you to ignore advice or rules here. I’m telling you to consider it, integrate what you can, and leave the rest out. You need to think things through, and you sure as hell don’t wanna be doing that “on the night.” You wanna be planned up and have as many problems solved as you can before you roll on your picture. There will be plenty of last-minute fires that need pissing on, no matter how well-planned your shoot, so try to minimize them ahead of time. Sometimes you need to approach things unconventionally.

I’m saying that if you are gonna do it no-budget, indie style, you had better be ready to do it your way, because chances are good no one else’s way will work.

Thanks,

Travis

P.S. If you are interested in auditioning, we do still have a few (less than a dozen) timeslots available. Visit the casting call page for details.

Also, you can watch my previous films here.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

This week became a HELL of alot busier than I had imagined. Between a paperwork SNAFU that devoured my entire Thursday, launching the Aegis Studios Forums, scheduling auditions, and working on content development for Rock Valley College I have not been able to complete the teaser images for RAYMOND DID IT that I fully intended to have ready to release this week. With a little luck, and some missed sleep, I should have something big to unveil next week.

In other news, I set a goal this past week to reach the #500 slot on TopWebComics with RECKONING: RE-CUT, which we briefly attained this morning, thanks alot to help from folks on twitter. At the time of this writing, we’ve been bumped doen to #512, so please, go check out the comic, and if you like it, vote for us. Doi it again tomorrow! Tell a friend! Let’s see if we can get below and stay below the #500 spot all weekend! Remember, RECKONING: RE-CUT updates MON-FRI EVERY DAY!

That’s all for now. Have a great weekend. I’ll be working the tookus off, so as to keep bringing you some fine web content!

Thanks,

Travis

Greetings,

It’s been a busy week so far, and from the look of it, it won’t be letting up anytime soon.

As you know, if you’ve been following the blog, I am in preproduction on my first feature film: Raymond Did It

As a part of this process, I have been scheduling auditions. I’ve been handling all the scheduling myself (frankly, I can’t afford a casting director). It’s been a time-consuming, but rewarding process.

Slots for auditions are filling up very quickly,  and our Saturday auditions are pretty much booked up, so if you happen to be an actor, happen to be anywhere near Rockford, Illinois, and happen to wanna be in a slasher film, you should visit my casting call website for info.

In preparation for the film, I have also been reaching out to investors and distributors. The vast amount of legwork involved in trying to get an ultra-low budget feature film made is staggering. My advice to first-time filmmakers: go work at McDonalds. It’s way less stressful.

If you don’t wanna take that advice, then plan to work 10-12 hour days for months and months on end, not seeing your loved ones nearly enough and hearing “no” alot. Do your legwork. Research things. Ask friends, family and strangers for advice, information, and resources. Read Joke and Biagio’s blog, because they are wise and in the industry and know what the hell they are talking about. They are also very giving with the nuggets of wisdom. Bust your ass alot, and work work work.

Do auditions. Don’t just cast your friends. Make them (and anyone else) work for it. You are working your ass off and you want others involved to work just as hard. The project will be better for it.

Stretch your dollars as far as you can. If you can get free stuff FIND A WAY TO USE IT! Be frugal. Negotiate the costs of ANYTHING you can.

USE THE INTERNET! Google, social media sites, and film forums are your friends. Utilize them. You’d be surprised what an afternoon online can get for your film.

Maybe when it’s all said and done you will wind up with a decent movie.

In non-film related news, I have returned to my favorite form of entertainment with the webcomic RECKONING: RE-CUT It’s a story of Love, Loss and Revenge for Mature Readers. RECKONING: RE-CUT is a comic book homage to the revenge films of the 1980’s. We update every Monday-Friday. Please check it out, vote, and comment!

Lastly, for all the Rockford, Illinois area folks:

Every Wednesday night from 6PM until 11 PM I am running a World of Darkness Mind’s Eye Theatre Live-Action Roleplaying game at the UU church in Rockford. (4848 Turner Street, Rockford, IL 61107-5099) It’s only a dollar to get in and it is a blast! If you’re in the stateline area, come check it out!

Now, I need to detach myself from my keyboard and spend some much-overdue time with my girlfriend.

Be seeing you!

-Travis

Ladies and gentlemen,

As you may be aware, Plastic Age Productions is currently casting out first feature film!

As noted in a recent blurb at REEL CHICAGO Raymond Did It is “a slasher film that he (being Travis Legge) describes as “‘Halloween’ meets ‘Sling Blade,’” about a retarded man exacting revenge on the people who framed him for his brother’s murder.”

Interested parties should visit http://www.aegisstudios.com/casting.html for details including downloadable audition sides and open call dates!

In other film news, the trailer for Memoirs of a Stinky Sofa is now online and can be viewed at www.aegisstudios.com/film.html

Memoirs of a Stinky Sofa is a comedy about moving on.

Memoirs of a Stinky Sofa film still featuring Melissa Revels and Tim Stotz

Melissa Revels as Elisha and Tim Stotz as Jared in Memoirs of a Stinky Sofa

The third part of the “Couch Trilogy,” Memoirs of a Stinky Sofa is the story of a young couple who are preparing to make the big leap into co-habitation. As they pack Jared’s (Tim Stotz) apartment, a debate begins as to whether or not to bring the smelly, ratty old couch to the brand new place. The young couple reminisces about all things wonderful and terrible that have occurred on the trusty old davenport, as they discuss the ultimate fate of the furnishing.

Starring Melissa Revels and Tim Stotz,

Trailer edited by Robert J. Williams (No relation to Ashley J. Williams, though easily as badass)

Memoirs of a Stinky Sofa is Written and Directed by Travis Legge.

Keep an eye on this area as the next several weeks will be filled with news and updates!
